7 Months Into Extended 2 Strands: What to Expect for Maintenance #6
7 Months Into Extended 2 Strands:
What to Expect for Maintenance #6
The transition phase of Extended 2 Strand Starter Locs is one of the most important stages of the loc journey 🌱
Between the 3rd and 6th maintenance, many clients begin noticing major changes in texture, fullness, frizz patterns, density, and overall structure. This is also the stage where the focus begins shifting from intentional extension maintenance to preserving the integrity of the developing loc itself.
Using Rayla’s journey at 7 months and her 6th maintenance as an example, this post breaks down what to expect during this phase and how to properly maintain your Extended 2 Strand Locs as they continue to mature.
Rayla’s 7 Month Update
Rayla is currently 7 months into her Extended 2 Strand journey with 110 Small Extended 2 Strand Locs.
Over the course of her journey, she completed 6 intentional Extended 2 Strand Maintenance appointments focused on:
maintaining the structure of the extensions
preserving consistency throughout the loc
supporting healthy development
minimizing unnecessary tension or weak points
seamlessly blending the natural hair with the extension hair over time
During her most recent appointment, we refreshed her locs with a rich jet black color and officially transitioned her into Routine Loc Maintenance moving forward.
Although her locs are not yet fully mature, her foundation has progressed beyond the phase of needing extension-focused maintenance.
This is a major milestone within the Extended 2 Strand process.
During her 6th maintenance appointment, I also focused on reshaping several locs where bunching had developed in a way that created inconsistency in the overall size and shape of the locs. As locs mature, certain areas may require intentional refinement to help maintain balance, structure, and uniformity throughout the journey.

What Happens Around 6–8 Months?
This stage is often where clients begin noticing:
increased fullness
more expansion within the loc
stronger structure
less dependency on extension reinforcement
more natural movement
visible progression in the maturing process
Your locs may still appear frizzy or soft in certain areas — this is completely normal.
At this phase, the goal is no longer perfection. The goal becomes healthy progression and maintaining the integrity of the foundation.
Transitioning Into Routine Maintenance
One of the biggest misconceptions about Extended 2 Strands is the belief that extension-focused maintenance is required forever.
In reality, intentional extension maintenance is only required during early stages of development.
As the natural hair continues to mature and strengthen around the extension hair, all of our clients eventually transition into standard Routine Loc Maintenance appointments.
The timeline of this transition depends on:
consistency
maintenance schedule
hair texture
loc size
overall loc development
Every journey progresses differently.
Maintenance Recommendations During This Phase
Stay Consistent With Maintenance
Routine maintenance becomes extremely important during this stage of the loc journey.
Most clients should remain within a 4–6 week maintenance schedule to help:
preserve the foundation
prevent excessive marrying
maintain healthy parting
reduce unnecessary tension
support healthy and consistent loc development
Crochet maintenance and extension reinforcement may still be needed throughout different stages of the loc journey depending on the condition, structure, and overall progression of the locs.
Long gaps between maintenance appointments during this phase can lead to larger repairs, increased tangling at the root, inconsistencies in sizing, and unnecessary stress on the hair and scalp over time.
Curly End Maintenance
If you wear curly ends, routine detangling is essential.
Curly ends should be detangled:
during every wash
every 2 weeks
or weekly if desired/advised
This helps prevent:
matting
excessive shedding
tangling at the ends
Hydration & Scalp Care
Healthy locs require consistent hydration.
Focus on:
lightweight moisture
scalp cleansing
routine shampooing
reducing buildup
A healthy scalp creates the best environment for long-term loc health and growth.
Trust The Process
The transition stage requires patience.
Your locs are evolving from a structured starter phase into a more natural and mature state. Frizz, expansion, bunching, and texture changes are all part of healthy loc development.
Rayla’s journey is a great example of what intentional maintenance, consistency, and patience can look like throughout the Extended 2 Strand process ✨
