Malinda's Loc Journey | 1 Year & 7 Months Loc'd
Malinda’s loc journey has been such a beautiful one to witness, and it’s been a pleasure watching her locs evolve into what they are today. Her progress is a great example of how consistency, professional maintenance, and intentional at-home care can work together throughout a loc journey.
When Malinda first began her journey, she had some straight ends due to previous heat damage. Rather than cutting those ends, I decided to preserve her length and give her hair time to see how it would respond throughout the process. I was confident that we could get some of her natural curl pattern to return—and over time, her ends began to revert. While the curls may not be exactly the same as they were prior to the heat damage, we've been able to restore and maintain beautiful curls without sacrificing her length.
Finding a Maintenance Routine That Works
Malinda is one of several clients who chooses to have her locs shampooed primarily during her professional maintenance appointments with me. She typically comes in about every four weeks, and because she does not experience scalp concerns that require more frequent cleansing, this routine has worked well for her individual hair and scalp needs.
While she leaves the shampooing and retwisting to me, she does a great job of maintaining her locs at home between appointments.
And one area where her consistency really shows is in her curly ends.
Curly End Maintenance + Length Retention
Maintaining curly ends requires intention. The loose hair at the ends can naturally tangle, shed, and eventually begin to lock if it isn't regularly maintained.
Malinda does an amazing job staying on top of her curly-end routine between visits. By the time she comes in for maintenance, her ends glide through the brush, which makes such a difference.
This is especially important when we're talking about length retention.
All hair naturally sheds, but when shed hairs remain tangled within the loose ends, they can create knots and matting. If those ends aren't maintained consistently, more hair may eventually have to be removed when they're detangled.
By keeping her ends separated, detangled, moisturized, and defined between appointments, we're able to minimize unnecessary tangling and breakage and retain as much of her natural length as possible.
It may seem like a small part of the routine, but over the course of a loc journey, those consistent habits add up.

Her locs have continued to mature, her curly ends are thriving, and we're retaining the length we've worked so intentionally to preserve.
