Carmen's Loc Journey: 1 Year & 5 Months Loc'd

2 min read

Carmen is officially 1 year and 5 months into her loc journey, and her progress is a beautiful example of what consistency, proper maintenance, and embracing your natural texture can look like.

Where Her Journey Started

Carmen began her journey with SMedium 2 Strand Starter Locs with Diamond Parts.

From the beginning, we incorporated curly ends into her look, giving her locs a softer finish while still allowing them to naturally mature and develop.

One of the unique things about Carmen’s journey is her kinkier natural hair texture.

Curly ends can present differently depending on texture, curl pattern, density, and at-home care. Even with Carmen’s tighter texture, her ends have continued to maintain their curl throughout the locing process.

Rather than working against her natural texture, we’ve allowed it to become part of what makes her loc journey uniquely hers.

Maintaining Her Curly Ends

At 17 months loc’d, Carmen’s curly ends are still a defining part of her look. As the rest of her hair has continued to mature and loc, her ends have remained curly, creating a beautiful contrast between the texture of her locs and the softness of her ends.

Curly ends require intentional care. They aren’t simply something created during the starter loc appointment and forgotten about. Keeping them hydrated, defined, and healthy requires both professional maintenance and consistent care at home.

Carmen has done an amazing job with both.

Consistency Makes a Difference

Carmen has maintained a regular 4–6 week maintenance schedule with me throughout her journey. Just as importantly, she has remained consistent with her at-home care routine between appointments.

That consistency has allowed us to monitor her locs as they mature, maintain her curly ends, address her hair’s needs along the way, and keep her overall journey progressing intentionally.

Every loc journey develops differently. Texture, density, lifestyle, maintenance habits, and at-home care can all influence how locs mature. Carmen’s journey is a great reminder that the goal isn’t for every set of locs to look the same—it’s to create and maintain a journey that complements your hair, your texture, and your desired look.

1 year & 5 months down—and Carmen’s loc journey is still evolving beautifully. 🌱
